Description
Rare and original, 1860’s Civil War Ninth Plate Tintype Photograph of an armed Union Artillery Soldier!! This outstanding, period Tintype Photograph measures approx. 2” by 2 1/2” and is housed in what appears to be its original, pressed paper hard case with patriotic / military motif, stamped brass matt. The Tintype is a wonderful, 3/4 length seated portrait of the young Artilleryman wearing a shell jacket and a forage cap. He sits in a somewhat relaxed pose holding the grip of an M1832 Foot Artillery Sword the blade onf which rests on his right shoulder. He also appears to be holding something else in the same hand as the sword – perhaps a gauntlet with its fingers pointed down and the cuff visible behind the sword. The Soldier has that far away look in his eyes that we have seen many times in portraits of Civil War soldiers who have "seen the elephant". Neither the soldier nor the photographer is identified in any way. This very rare and wonderful, Civil War Tintype Portrait of an armed Union Army Artillery Soldier is in very good condition. The focus is sharp although the image is somewhat dark overall. The Tintype is generally clean and crisp and well preserved but there are scattered small scratches and blemishes to the emulsion. The surface is sound and stable with no crazing and no flaking. The pressed paper hard case is split at the spine but is otherwise well preserved. A rare and original, 1860’s Civil War Ninth Plate Tintype Photograph of an armed Union Army Artillery Soldier and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
