RARE Civil War Federal SAWYER Shell BASE with Nov. 13th 1855 patent date visible. Recently dug in South Louisiana. I understand the SAWYER shell and bolt to be the RAREST of all Federal Civil War projectiles used exclusively(?) by the Second Vermont Artillery. This BASE weighs 8lbs. 4oz., is 16 1/2" in circumference and 5 1/4" in diameter. A light coat of clear polyurethane has been applied to the cast iron portion only (not the lead portion).
