Description
US Civil War Model 1840 Artillery Sword with Scabbard. The ricasso is marked "Ames Mfg Co.", "Chicopee", "Mass.", the reverse has "US", "J.H." over "1861.", the top of the pommel has a partial "J.H.". The guard is a little scratched up. The grip, guard, and pommel are all tight. The grip has about 90% of the leather remaining. The twisted wire is 100% complete. The blade is straight, unsharpened, a few nicks on the lower third, the tip has been blunted, and it has age spots freckles and light pitting scattered throughout. The scabbard is solid with a few dents, there is light pitting with some minor surface rust scattered throughout, and it is a little tight on/off the sword. The leather washer is intact. Length of the blade is 32 1/8" (1 1/4" wide and 3/8" thick), the sword is 37 5/8", and in the scabbard it is 39 1/2". 5000 Ames Artillery Swords dated 1861 were made, 750 were rejected leaving only 4250 for the Civil War.
