JAMES P. ELLIOTT enlisted on June 8, 1861, as a private and was mustered into I Co. CT 1 st Heavy Artillery. Elliott was promoted several times during his enlistment as corporal, sergeant, 1 st sergeant and 2 nd lieutenant. His regiment was involved at the battles of Gettysburg, Yorktown, Hanover Court House, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Mine Run, Wilmington, Fort Stedman, the Peninsula Campaign, Seven Days Battle and the Appomattox Campaign. 3 pp, 5 x 8, he writes from Fort Scott, VA, September 19 th , 1863, to his mother. Cover included. While his letter doesn’t mention Gettysburg, the CT 1 st was fought in many important battles. “...I have had a light touch of the chills and fever since I wrote to you the last time...We had rations of good whiskey twice a day and I took mine to keep off the chills...Our old capt. Went home about a month ago and now we have a new one...He is a real nice man and I think we should like him very much...George and I are well as usual.
