Post Hospital Bermuda Hundred, Virginia Feby 9, 1865 Dear Niece, Yours of Feby 3rd came to hand this evening, and I will try to write a few lines and answer. Although it is getting late, but it will be the best chance I shall have in a long time for a sale for Fort Fisher, North Carolina in the morning. Now don’t scold as you threatened for. I think it is the best thing that I can do. I go voluntarily and trust that it is for the best. The fact is I was getting rusty here, but let me get to me get back with my old Commands and I shall feel at home. Don’t think that I am braver than men in general for I am not, but I do love excitement, even if there is a little danger mixed with it. I expect in the morning to bid farewell to comfort and luxuries. I don’t expect to have a _____ mattress to sleep on nor pillow or sheets but how are you, ________, hard Tack and Salt Horse, and I suppose plenty of fighting but some must do it and why not I _______. I am glad that your mother’s health was good enough to let her come to see you. I hope it did not make her sick. Then you don’t think I could scold do you? You had bought to hear me talk to the darkies here then I guess you would alter your opinion, but they all like me for _____ one old fellow actually shed tears when I bid him goodbye. I bid the boys all goodbye this evening, for I expect to be off early in the morning. It is hard to part with some of them that I have associated with for the last six months. You girls had better look out for that lawyer, or he will be summoning up the evidence and past sentence on some of your cases don’t you fear it. _____ - Who the Devil is Kate? Not a very pretty expression to be sure but who is she the one with the Curls. But as it is getting late, I must close. You must excuse a short letter this time. I will do better the next. My Love to all enquiring friends. Write soon and direct to Co. F, 16th NY Arty, 1st Div, 2nd Brig, 24 _____ And remember me to all yours. ____ G. Campbell To his Niece Hellen L. Quackenbush
