Description

This letter is written from Edgar Bennett of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery. It also contains remnants of their regimental flag. That’s incredible!! He writes on December 29, 1864 from before Petersburg Virginia to his future wife Mary. They are demoralizing the end. There was considerable artillery on our right and left yesterday. There is to be a change soon as there is to be furloughs granted to the officers. The deserters continue to come in from Rebels lines. They seem to be discouraged and seem to be right happy to get into our lines. They also manned the famous Dictator Mortar at Petersburg. It does include portion of their regiment flag. He was also taken prisoner and sent to Libby prison. Signed Edgar B.
