Description
Up for sale is a scarce Sheble & Fisher, Type 1, U.S. Model 1840 Artillery Saber & scabbard, manufactured in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between 1861 and the end of the American Civil War. This Type 1 saber, with blade in untouched condition, is accompanied by a period-correct Type 2 scabbard. This 160 + year old antique saber is in remarkably good/serviceable condition. On the bottom of the guard notice that Sheble & Fisher's mark, a stylized "R", is present (reference: John Thillmann book, "Civil War Cavalry and Artillery Sabers"). There was only one federal government contract in 1861 for 203 artillery sabers, and it is unclear how many of each variant (Type 1 or Type 2) were included in that contract. There are no records of how many of these sabers may have been manufactured or purchased through militia or state contracts during the war. It is likely that only a small number were produced and fewer yet survive as they are only occasionally offered for sale. Please view all photos as they are part of this item’s detailed description.
